Graze the Roof
This year GreenZebra is donating
a portion of each guide’s purchase
price to Graze the Roof, an edible,
community-produced vegetable
garden on the rooftop at Glide
Foundation, a progressive church
and nonprofit located in San
Francisco’s Tenderloin district.
The project, an experiment in local,
urban, sustainable, Do-It-Ourselves
food production, features:
- soil-less gardening vegetable
growers;
- Earthboxes, a brand of
self-watering container;
- customized lightweight garden
beds made from shipping pallets
and milk crates;
- a worm composting system
Community volunteers from
throughout the Bay Area helped
construct the garden. Glide youth,
who come mostly from low-income
families, are gaining hands-on
experience maintaining the
garden and are helping create an
educational mural that ties the
whole project together. The artwork
depicts young people planting,
harvesting, eating and composting
their crops of kale, corn, squash,
cucumbers and tomatoes.
Graze the Roof is expected to
produce hundreds of pounds of
fruits and vegetables annually.
The project is intended to stimulate
healthier dietary choices and
strengthen the connection between
people and their food source.
This natural sanctuary is also a
place where inner city youth and
adults can come to be empowered
and inspired, or just to relax.
