GZ Tip #5: Farm Fresh Agriculture Delivered to your Door
This is a great time to enjoy delicious, fresh, locally grown produce by joining a community-supported agriculture (CSA) co-op. CSAs deliver a share of their harvest, direct from the farm, at regular intervals-- usually every week or two. The food is fresh, supports local organic farms, and helps minimize the distance produce travels from field to plate. On conventional farms only 10% of fossil fuel energy used to generate food goes into growing it: 90% goes to ads, packaging and transport. CSAs are also a great way to learn more about where your food comes from and to establish a relationship with those who are grow it for you. The fruits and veggies you receive are always fresh and seasonal, giving you the opportunity to try new recipes each week! Joining a CSA is like having the best of the farmers’ market selected and delivered to you.

Greetings
Summer is finally upon us. Time to enjoy long days, lazy nights and that highly anticipated awaited vacation! In the Bay Area we’re blessed to have a myriad of fun recreational activities at our disposal. So before planning to fly off to some exotic locale, consider minimizing the environmental impact of your time off by vacationing in your own backyard. Send your green vacation ideas to contest@thegreenzebra.org for a chance to win a $60 gift certificate to Sports Basement.
Last month's contest winner was Drew G. of San Francisco who gave his mother a compost bin for Mother's Day so she’ll be able to nurture beautiful homegrown flowers throughout the year.
Aquarium of the Bay & PG&E Fight Climate Change
Jellies more graceful than prima ballerinas, octopuses as cunning as magicians, and a colorful array of land creatures star in engaging new exhibits now open at Aquarium of the Bay.
Aquarium of the Bay and PG&E have teamed up to promote energy conservation in the new 1,200 square foot, solar powered PG&E Bay Lab. The lab features animals whose habitats are in danger due to climate change. The exhibit focuses primarily on native species along with a few critters from other regions. Visitors can interact with Blue Tongued Skinks, African Pygmy Hedgehogs and California King Snakes, and also have the chance to view Pink-toed Tarantulas, Chinchillas and Honey Bees. Stop by and guess which animals are locals and which could not thrive in the Bay Area. Land animal exhibits and touch pools holding sharks, bat rays, sea stars, & more converge with the PG&E Bay Lab station, featuring animal interactions, science experiments and special presentations.
Pacific Sea Nettles and Moon Jellies greet visitors as they enter the Aquarium’s main “Under the Bay” experience. Jellies are made up of 95% water and have no heart, brains, bones or other organs. But, what they lack in body, they make up in charm – their graceful gliding earns them top marks with Aquarium visitors.
The Giant Pacific Octopus' tank features a pop -up window where smaller explorers – and those willing to stoop – can crawl inside for a unique peek. Giant Pacific Octopuses are underwater magicians that can change color within a fraction of a second; produce an ink smokescreen for avoiding predators, and find escape routes through any space wider than their beak. Also check out some of the octopus’ neighbors including Pacific Spiny Lumpsuckers, Grunt Sculpins and Dungeness Crabs.
Remember, Green Zebra users receive 2-for-1 admission to Aquarium of the Bay. Buy a Green Zebra for $15 by clicking the link below. What are you waiting for?! Visit www.aquariumofthebay.com to start planning your visit.

Getting to know Mill Nash of Clean Air Lawn Care
What do people love most about Clean Air Lawn Care?
Actually there are two things:
1. We are QUIET! People love the fact that our electric equipment is so much quieter than the other guys'.
2. We are organic and pesticide free. Chemical fertilizers and toxic pesticides are unsafe for children, pets and the environment. Our customers love that our organic fertilizers and sustainable landscape practices create safe and healthy lawns that use up to 50% less water.
What makes Clean Air green?
All of our electric equipment is powered by wind and solar energy...we have solar panels on our trucks which charge the equipment during the day. While traditional gas lawn equipment produces between 5%-10% of the nation's air pollution, we produce none. We use only organic fertilizers and non-toxic pesticides. We buy carbon credits to offset all energy used to power our offices and our trucks, making Clean Air Lawn Care a completely carbon neutral company. We are also a certified Bay Area Green Business and Bay-Friendly Landscaper.
What was your inspiration for becomming green?
It began years ago. I was reading Rachel Carson's Silent Spring during a year-long backpacking trip around the world and witnessed first-hand the stress that a growing, consuming population was putting on the earth. My foray into “green” continued when I returned to work at Patagonia, one of the very first environmental, sustainable clothing companies, where I was able to educate our customers and help them make choices to create a “greener planet”. However, my green inspiration really hit home with the birth and growth of my two year old daughter, Parker. Watching her crawl and run around in grass which I knew to be maintained with dangerous chemicals and pesticides (to create a “cosmetically green” look), I knew there had to be a better way. Other countries actually have laws that ban these "cosmetic" chemicals. With Clean Air Lawn Care I know that every new customer takes a bit more CO2 out of the air, actually begins to improve soil fertility and makes neighborhoods much healthier for our kids and pets.
What is your guilty non-green pleasure?
Long showers after a hard day of work.
What would you like to see accomplished in '09?
You mean, besides the elimination of loud gas powered leaf blowers? I really believe that nationally, cap and trade has a chance to pass this year and will have significant effects. But fundamentally what I would like to see accomplished is the integration and acceleration of simple small steps that each one of us can do every day to change the direction of our future. And I hope that a choice to switch to Clean Air Lawn Care can be one of those small steps.
